The field trip will be held during the last day of the Meeting (Monday 22/5) and includes stops at the following sites:

The Petrified Forest Park

A tour of the Petrified Forest Park, an unparalleled monument around the world, is a unique experience. The plethora of standing fossilized trunks, and their excellent state of preservation impresses visitors.

The park is accessible via a 5 km long paved road which starts from the 15th km mark of the Antissa-Sigri road.

The region in which the Park was established in 1987 has been referred to as “Kiria Apolithomeni” (Main Fossil site) since the 18th century. This site is the first visiting park of the Petrified Forest, covering an area of 286 hectares. Integrated interventions for the protection and preservation of the fossils have been conducted over the years.

Visitors to the park can tour an entire mountainside along specially constructed trails. During the tour visitors can view the unique displays of Protopinaceae, ancestors of the modern-day pine tree, grouped in small clusters. Most of the fossilized trunks belong to the Taxodiaceae, forerunners of the present-day sequoia which grows on the west coast of the United States. The largest lying coniferous trunk (longer than 20 meters) and the large standing sequoia trunks belong to this family.

Kalloni bay and lagoon

The Gulf of Kalloni includes the whole coastal Gulf area and a large number of inland wetlands (salt marshes of Kalloni and Polichnitos, streams of Tsiknias, Vouvaris, Mylopotamos, Ennia Kamares and Potamia, Messa lagoon, etc.). The region is comprised by fragile ecosystems (rivers, estuaries, muddy or sandy lagoons, marine areas, saline steppes etc.).

The Bay of Kalloni is very important for the bird migration. Many rare species of birds stop here during their migration (those who follow the eastern runway of Greece) and many species that belong to Annex 1 to Council Directive 409/79/EEC live here. Indicatively: coots, avocets, white storks, pink flamingos, shags etc. This area is also full of olive trees, rare species of orchids and many endemic flowers and plants.

The Gulf is also known as “Aristotle’s lagoon” because of the time the philosopher spent studying the animals in and around the Gulf of Kalloni. Following his departure from Plato's Academy after being passed over for the school's headship, Aristotle spent a few years with his friend and fellow philosopher and naturalist, Theophrastus, at the Kalloni lagoon, studying animal life: his observations there formed the material for the very first treatises ever written on the subject of biology, namely his books on the "history, parts, movement, progression, and generation" of animals.

Barbayannis Ouzo Liquor Distiller and Museum, Plomari

The Barbayannis family has been passionately pursuing perfection in the taste of greek ouzo and preserving the traditional distillation techniques for five generations. As a result, the Barbayannis name is identified throughout the world for its prime Greek Ouzo, the finest Greek liquor beverage.

Today, in the picturesque settlement of Plomari, Lesvos, technology harmoniously co-exists with history and tradition. The Ouzo Liquor Museum was founded to express the love and passion the Barbayannis family has for the production of ouzo.

The Ouzo Liquor Museum is located next to the modern, privately-owned distilleries of the Barbayannis ouzo production facilities.

In the ouzo liquor museum visitors can see the original equipment used to bottle and label the famous Ouzo Barbayanni Blue, as well as the first alembic, constructed in 1858 in Constantinople, used for testing century-old secrets and techniques, and to compose the recipes of the Barbayannis family. The Ouzo Liquor Museum respectfully embraces tradition and is the home of the secret of the quality and taste found in Greek Ouzo Barbayanni.

The Barbayannis Ouzo Museum includes a visitor's center and a gift shop. Wine–tasting tours are provided.
